On Tuesday 19th February we had our first meeting of the year to review what we had done last year, to discuss developments to the garden since our last meeting & to plan our next work session.
Since we had our last work session in the Gardens in November 2012, Cheltenham Borough Council have cleared an area in the shrubberies to one side of the Gardens so that we can plant fruit bushes, the Council have also extended the area of our existing vegetable beds so we should be able to grow a greater variety of vegetable crops than last year. The Council have also put a mulch of spent mushroom compost on the beds & have also provided us with bins, located in one of the shrub borders, so that we can start doing our own composting.
During our meeting we decided to establish beds for perennial vegetables, such as artichokes (both globe & jerusalem), asparagus, tree onions, rhubarb & others.
Our next work session will be on Saturday 2nd March from 2pm when we will plant up the newly-cleared fruit beds, we've had offers of blackcurrants, gooseberries, thornless loganberries & some other shrubs.
